Buhari Declares June 12 as Democracy Day

MY TAKE ON PMB’s DECLARATION OF JUNE 12 AS DEMOCRACY DAY.

Haba, Baba Buhari! Haven’t you become a little too desperate now, with this June 12th holiday and a posthumous GCFR for the MKO Abiola you have always hated for being a financier and part of the IBB coup that took you out?

Unfortunately, Baba, the blindest of people knows the colour of desperation. And you are today wearing those same colours. But unfortunately, desperation being extreme weakness, and a dead giveaway signal, it is always taken advantage of. Be careful how desperate you make yourself look, Baba Buhari.

Whoever advised you to do this, whether El-Rufai or his Rasputin, Jimi Lawal, or even Governor Amosun, has done you in. No advocates of June 12th as a public holiday will overlook your very weak three years’ record for a mere formalisation of something they feel is their right. That which they know you did only in order to earn their support. And it is wrong timing too, Mr. President. You should have done this very early in your term. Better still, it should have been in your campaign promises. But now, it is too little, too late.

Too little because Afenifere, NADECO, NALICON, MKO’s family, what they really want is much more than you have grudgingly given to him whom you have always considered an enemy for financing IBB’s coup against you. What they want is a formal declaration of Abiola as a duly elected president, and according him that status. They also want the carrying out of a full investigation into denying him his win, and another investigation into his death. And to bring those responsible to book. Unless you can do this, Baba Buhari, what you have done stands as too little and too late, and it merely signals your desperation for Western votes.

The choice is yours now, Mr. President. You either go the whole hog and investigate, as well as prosecute those who denied MKO his win and plunged this country into a terrible political crisis, and proceed to investigate and fully prosecute those responsible for MKO’s death in custody, or you can write off this meaningless gesture of declaring June 12th a public holiday and granting MKO a posthumous GCFR. It won’t do anything for you. Yoruba votes aren’t that cheap.

The Igbos may have voted for Shagari in 1983 when he pardoned Ojukwu and brought him home in 1982, but the issue of MKO Abiola is much greater than these two simple gestures you have announced, Mr. President. Your strategists and advisers got it completely wrong. This can’t win you Yoruba votes. It is your performance, or the lack of it, and your readiness to fulfill all righteousness on the Abiola matter that really matter.
